04 January – The Story of Turkey’s Oldest Museum
‘Mendel-Sebah: Documenting The Imperial Museum’ traces the evolution of a 1,860-page catalogue, prepared by French archaeologist Gustave Mendel between 1912 and 1914. The catalogue documents the rich collection of the Müze-i Hümayun, or Imperial Museum, today known as the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. Also on display are accompanying photos taken by Pascal Sébah, and illustrations created by Georges Payraud. The collection reveals the preparation process of the catalogue, by clarifying the complexity of relations between artefacts, photos, illustrations and texts. The exhibition runs until 11 January at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums.
