11 May – Jazz and Rock Meet Arabic Music
Dhafer Youssef, a composer, singer, and player of the Middle Eastern oud, is coming to Istanbul. In a break with tradition, Youssef left Tunisia to study jazz in Paris, achieving an interesting fusion where the experimental spirit of jazz came together with the oud’s Middle Eastern sensitivity. Youssef’s album Birds Requiem, released in 2013, was warmly welcomed by audience and critics. While preserving the link to his roots, Youssef’s music manages to adopt elements of jazz and rock that contrast with and highlight the qualities of Arabic musical culture. He will take the stage at Is Sanat at 8 p.m.
