04 April – Modern Mystical Music
Iranian-born American singer Azam Ali will be taking the stage with her band Niyaz, which means ‘yearning’ in Persian. Generally described as ‘mystical music with a modern edge’, Niyaz’s sound is primarily a blend of Sufi mysticism and trance electronica. Niyaz reinterpret Persian, Indian and Mediterranean folk music traditions. The bulk of their lyrics are derived from Persian and Urdu Sufi poetry by the likes of Rumi and Obeyd-e Zakani, as well as folk songs from Iran and other parts of the Middle East. The concerts are at The Mekan, 10 p.m.
